The ICJ has this week begun the merits hearing in The Gambia v Myanmar, an application concerning Myanmar’s responsibility for the Rohingya genocide in 2016-2017.

During so-called “clearance operations” in northern Rakhine State between 2016 and 2017, Myanmar’s military (the Tatmadaw) killed over 10,000 Rohingya, committed widespread sexual and gender-based violence, and destroyed 180 Rohingya villages. Over 700,000 Rohingya fled the country into neighbouring Bangladesh where they remain, 9 years later, in refugee camps.
