Prison Law

Our exceptional level of expertise in human rights and public law informs our practice in prison law. We have advised and represented parties within various settings, from parole board hearings to the Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights. They deal with issues concerning:

  • Proceedings before Parole Boards.
  • Conduct inquests arising in the prison context.
  • Civil litigation including claims for assault, negligence, misfeasance.
  • Discrimination claims on the grounds of race, sex, disability, religion or other protected characteristics.

Matrix members have appeared in most of the leading prison law cases, and members of the team co-write Prison Law (OUP, 5th edn), the leading textbook in the area, now in its fourth edition. Matrix members regularly write and lecture on all aspects of prisoners’ rights.
