Ukraine v Russia in the International Court of Justice

Published:

Toby Fisher is appearing today in the International Court of Justice, acting for New Zealand in its intervention in the claim brought by Ukraine against Russia under the Genocide Convention.

Ukraine claims that Russia has breached its obligations under Articles I and IV of the Genocide Convention by launching a full-scale invasion on the pretext of a false claim that Ukraine was committing genocide in the Donbas region.

The International Court of Justice is currently considering Russia’s preliminary objections to the claim. New Zealand has intervened under Article 63 of the Statute of the ICJ, as a party to the Genocide Convention.
