Alex Bailin QC calls in the Times today for the introduction of a public interest defence in the Official Secrets Acts, to ensure accountability in government and protect those who make disclosures of wrongdoing in the public interest.

Together with Jessica Jones, Mishcon de Reya, and communications consultancy Powerscourt, Alex is co-ordinating a campaign (funded by tech entrepreneur Janus Friis) for a general public interest defence to be included as part of the anticipated modernisation of the Official Secrets Act.

That expected modernisation follows criticism of the existing Acts by the Intelligence and Security Committee, and by the Law Commission, who in its recent paper “Protection of Official Data” also calls for the introduction of a public interest defence.
