The Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland has allowed appeals by Sir Van Morrison against orders removing his right to jury trials in two libel actions.

The court held that the first instance the judge had erred in failing to consider the two cases separately when deciding whether there were special reasons to deny his statutory right to jury trial. In the first case, Sir Van Morrison is suing the then Minister of Health, Robin Swann, and the Department of Health over an article in Rolling Stone magazine criticising him for songs that he put out during the pandemic. In the second case, Mr Swann is suing Sir Van Morrison over remarks he made about the Minister some months later.

Gavin Millar KC acted for Sir Van Morrison and was instructed by Mills Selig.
