Extradition and Mutual Assistance

Alex Bailin QC and James Stansfeld, instructed by Danielle Reece-Greenhalgh and Andrew Smith of Corker Binning solicitors, working in collaboration with Kelwin Nicholls and Chris Morvillo of Clifford Chance LLP and Jeremy Temkin of Morvillo Abramowitz, successfully represented Mr. Oleg Tinkov whose extradition was sought by the United States of America.

Extradition has been resisted for the past 18 months on the basis of Mr Tinkov’s grave state of health. During that time the UK team worked closely with Mr Tinkov’s lawyers in the United States. Mr Tinkov and the US authorities were able to negotiate a satisfactory plea deal that involved payment of approximately US$500 million (including all civil tax liabilities), a custodial sentence of one day (time served) and no probation/supervision requirements in the UK. On Wednesday 3 November 2021, Mr Tinkov was discharged from the extradition proceedings following the withdrawal of the Request.
