Police assaulted activist following Class War May Day demonstration
His Honour Judge Lethem, sitting in the Central London County Court, has delivered judgment in a claim relating to an alleged assault by a Metropolitan police officer against a left-wing activist on a busy street in east London.
Upholding the claimant’s claim, the Judge rejected the police case that the claimant had “ferociously attacked” an officer, and found that the police force had failed to establish that the force used against the claimant, which included an officer punching him in the head and kneeing him in the gut with maximum force, was reasonable (though he found the police actions were not politically motivated). The Judge awarded substantial damages including damages for personal injury, injury to feelings and aggravated and exemplary damages.
Darryl Hutcheon acted for the claimant in this case.
