There is group litigation in the High Court in Belfast in which thousands of police officers are suing the Police Service of Northern Ireland for the negligent release into the public domain of their personal data, including names and roles/numbers.
Five test cases are currently being tried on issues of causation and quantum of damages. Evidence has been received from former ACC Chris Todd in which the causes of the data breach and the steps taken to mitigate its effects were considered.
In a separate development the NI Executive has set aside nearly £120m to make a universal offer of settlement to the 8,000 claimants in the group litigation.
Gavin Millar KC acts for claimants in three of the test cases instructed by McCartan Turkington Breen and Edwards and Co.
