Congratulations to Mariyam Kamil who has successfully completed her third six traineeship and joins Matrix as a member.
Mariyam was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2021 and is also admitted to the Bar in India. Mariyam is developing her practice in media and information law and has worked on a variety of cases during her traineeship including Wright v McCormack (an appeal regarding the reduction of libel damages based on litigation misconduct) and Dyson v Channel 4 (raising the issue of extrinsic reference in defamation). As a trainee, Mariyam was under the supervision of leading media law barristers including Catrin Evans KC, Sara Mansoori KC, Ian Helme, Edward Craven and Kirsten Sjøvoll.
Before joining Matrix, Mariyam was a pupil at 5RB Chambers. She has also previously worked as a judicial assistant to the Chief Justice of India and interned at the office of the Attorney General of India. She was a Laureate Visiting Fellow in comparative constitutional law at the University of Melbourne, and has served as visiting faculty at the NALSAR University of Law, India.
