Julian Assange was released from HMP Belmarsh yesterday afternoon following a successful bail application. He was permitted to travel voluntarily to the Northern Mariana Islands in order to enter into a plea agreement with the United States government. He is expected to plead to a single count under the Espionage Act and be sentenced to time served.

The deal comes shortly after Mr Assange was granted permission to appeal the order for his extradition on free speech grounds. The appeal was due to be heard on 9 and 10 July 2024.

Mr Assange has been represented in his extradition matter by Edward Fitzgerald KC of Doughty Street Chambers, Mark Summers KC, and Florence Iveson.
