James has been nominated for his pro bono work over the past year which includes:

  • Providing pro bono representation to several modern slavery victims and victims of sexual offences and domestic violence in criminal injuries compensation cases. These include the appellant in S v CICA, which resulted in the highest ever compensation award to a victim of modern slavery, of over £350,0000.
  • Advising a Law Centre during the August 2024 riots in relation to civil remedies to secure its safety.
  • Work with the Death Penalty Project on an appeal against the death penalty imposed on a UK national in Bangladesh, a Jamaica murder appeal, and strategic litigation against the death penalty in Nigeria.
  • Representing the appellant pro bono in the Court of Appeal in Sullivan v Isle of Wight, which if successful would result in English job applicants being afforded whistleblowing protection.

The Bar Pro Bono awards are run by Advocate, the Bar’s Pro Bono Charity, to recognise the importance of pro bono work in ensuring access to justice. Matrix congratulates all nominees for the awards and wishes them good luck!
