Hugh Southey QC acted in the appeal of R (Johnson) v Secretary of State UKSC 56. In Johnson the Supreme Court concluded that the appellant’s inability to obtain citizenship violated article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Had the appellant not been out of wedlock, he would have been a citizen. The consequence of this discrimination was that deportation was unlawful. The judgment can be found here.
