On 5 June the High Court in Northern Ireland gave judgment in Carl Frampton v Barry McGuigan and others. Mr Frampton is a multiple world, European and Commonwealth bantamweight and featherweight champion. Mr McGuigan was a legendary Northern Irish world boxing champion in the 1980s and became Frampton’s manager in 2009. A McGuigan company also promoted Frampton’s fights. The relationship broke down last year and Frampton is suing McGuigan and his associates for unpaid income and profits earned during his management/promotion. McGuigan has issued proceedings in the High Court in London claiming that Frampton breached the promotion agreement in 2017. Horner J nonetheless ruled that the Belfast court has jurisdiction to determine Frampton’s claims under the Civil Jurisdiction and Judgments Act 1982. Frampton is seeking a stay of the proceedings in London. Gavin Millar QC acts for Frampton.
