On a day of unprecedented high temperatures triggered by climate change, the High Court declared that the Government had unlawfully failed to explain how the UK would meet Carbon Budgets set by Parliament, holding that the Government must produce a new Net Zero Strategy within 8 months.
The Court held that the Secretary of State had approved the Strategy despite not having sufficient information before him to be satisfied that the carbon budgets could be met and then published it in a form which was incomplete and lacked transparency.
Friends of the Earth, Client Earth and the Good Law Project brought the challenge. Matrix’s Emma Foubister, Jessica Simor and David Wolfe acted for claimants.
