13 climate change activists from the protest group Plane Stupid have escaped immediate jail terms. The Heathrow 13, consisting of six women and seven men, were charged with aggravated trespass and sentenced to six weeks in jail suspended for 12 months. In July last year, the group cut a hole in the perimeter fence of Heathrow to gain access to the north runway. When here they chained themselves to some runway fencing where they remained for 6 hours. The group were concerned about climate change and runway expansion and defended their actions as necessary to stop people dying from the effects of pollution and climate change.

Mark Summers QC represented 5 of the defendants and was instructed by Mike Schwarz of Bindmans and Raj Chada of Hodge Jones and Allen.
