The High Court yesterday considered next steps in a challenge about immigration detainees’ access to justice, which had seen the Court of Appeal urgently blocking the deportation of detainees to Jamaica last week on the basis that they had not been provided with access to lawyers. In yesterday’s hearing, Detention Action criticised the Government’s response to the Court of Appeal order, saying that Number 10’s threat to curtail the scope of judicial review was an unjustified attack on the constitution. The Government were given until 28 February to provide answers about the steps they have taken to secure access to justice for immigration detainees.

Chris Buttler and Jessica Jones acted on behalf of Detention Action, instructed by Duncan Lewis solicitors.
