Court of Appeal overturns prison sentences of three anti-fracking protestors
The Court of Appeal today overturned the prison sentences of three anti-fracking protestors who had prevented the delivery of equipment to Cuadrilla’s Lancashire site. Lord Ken Macdonald QC, Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh and Jessica Jones intervened for Friends of the Earth in the proceedings. They argued that the prison sentences imposed on the men were manifestly excessive, because imprisoning peaceful protestors for action taken in accordance with their sincerely held environmental beliefs breaches their fundamental rights to freedom of belief, freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly. The Court of Appeal agreed that the sentences imposed on the protestors were manifestly excessive.
