Apsana Begum MP acquitted of housing fraud

Published:

Apsana Begum MP was acquitted by a jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court this afternoon of three counts of housing fraud. Ms Begum was accused of dishonestly not disclosing her circumstances to Tower Hamlets council in order to gain a social housing tenancy.  She gave evidence that her then husband, now a Councillor in Tower Hamlets, was controlling and coercive, including, she believes, by making social housing bids in her name.

Jurors found Ms Begum not guilty of all charges after the Judge gave a majority direction.

Helen Law represented Ms Begum, instructed by Raj Chada of Hodge Jones and Allen.
