25th Anniversary of the Aarhus Convention

Matrix has been pleased to mark the 25th anniversary this week of the UNECE Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (known as the Aarhus Convention). As celebrated at a reception hosted last week by Matrix (attended by over 70 people including lawyers, NGO representatives, academics, civil servants and Compliance Committee representatives),  the Convention has played a key role in helping democratise the process of environmental decision making across Europe and beyond. Measures to implement the Convention in the UK – particularly relating to the cost of environmental judicial reviews – have been key to enabling public scrutiny of the legality of decisions affecting the environment including around climate change, the biodiversity crisis and environmental pollution.
