Mariyam is developing a practice in all aspects of media and information law.

Mariyam joined Matrix as a member in May 2023 upon successful completion of her third-six traineeship. During traineeship, she was supervised by Sara Mansoori KC, Kirsten Sjøvoll, Catrin Evans KC, Ian Helme and Edward Craven. Mariyam is currently developing a practice in all aspects of media and information law including defamation, privacy/misuse of private information, confidentiality, data protection and harassment.

Before coming to the bar, Mariyam read for the BCL, MPhil and DPhil degrees at the University of Oxford. Her research, which examines the constitutional right to privacy in India, was cited with approval by the Supreme Court of India in KS Puttaswamy v Union of India AIR 2017 SC 4161.

  • Advising a real estate entrepreneur on a potential defamation claim against a regional newspaper (with Anthony Hudson KC).

During traineeship, Mariyam worked on several defamation matters including:

  • The appeal in Wright v McCormack on the relevance of litigation misconduct in assessing damages for defamation (assisting Catrin Evans KC and Ben Silverstone).
  • Dyson v Channel 4, which raised the issue of extrinsic reference in defamation (assisting Ian Helme).
  • Drafting a response to a letter before action alleging defamation and harassment (assisting Kirsten Sjøvoll).
  • Advising a cricket club, a potential defendant in a defamation claim, on issues of meaning, limitation and quantum of damages (assisting Kirsten Sjøvoll).
  • Drafting a letter before action alleging a defamation claim against a Turkish television channel and politician (unled).

As a trainee, Mariyam worked on many cases involving privacy and confidentiality, including:

  • Advising a solicitors’ firm in resisting an application for third party disclosure in the context of claims for misuse of private information, breach of confidence and unlawful means conspiracy (assisting Sara Mansoori KC).
  • Canary Riverside Estate Management Limited v Coates, a 12-day trial in the Central London County Court raising issues relating to privileged/confidential documents, specific performance of a disclosure agreement and the defence of ‘unclean hands’ (assisting Guy Vassall-Adams KC).
  • Acting in an infant settlement approval hearing arising from a data protection claim in the context of child adoption.
  • During traineeship, Mariyam worked on a number of cases involving data protection law including advising multiple individuals on potential claims arising from profiles maintained by due diligence databases (assisting Sara Mansoori KC).

During traineeship, Mariyam also worked on a number of other matters, including:

  • Robertson v Google LLC, for a hearing which raised jurisdictional issues in the context of a claim under the Equality Act 2010 and breach of contract (assisting Catrin Evans KC).
  • Hayes v Dudhill, for a hearing resisting a Norwich Pharmacal application on behalf of a leading political party (assisting Kirsten Sjøvoll).

Mariyam has previously worked as a judicial assistant to the Chief Justice of India and interned at the office of the Attorney General of India. She was a Laureate Visiting Fellow in comparative constitutional law at the University of Melbourne, and has served as visiting faculty at the NALSAR University of Law, India.

Mariyam was the General Editor of the Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal (OUCLJ) and the Convenor of the South Asian Law Discussion Group at Oxford.
