Nicklin J refuses to dismiss ‘phone hacking’ privacy claims against Mail newspapers

Re: Baroness Lawrence & ors v Associated Newspapers Ltd

On 10 November Nicklin J delivered judgment on two applications by ANL in these privacy claims. He dismissed ANL’s application that the claims were statute barred, ruling the limitation issues should go on to trial.  He granted ANL’s application that parts of the claimants’ particulars of claim that relied on ledgers disclosed by ANL to the Leveson Inquiry breached a restriction order imposed in the Inquiry and, unless a Minister allowed their use, those parts would be struck out. The court extended reporting restrictions made at the hearing in March 2023, including anonymity of accused journalists, until they could be considered further at the consequentials hearing.
