Former MP’s plea of malice against the defendant newspaper struck out

Re: Yeo v Times Newspapers Ltd [2015] EWHC 209 (QB)

The Court held the claimant’s plea of malice would be struck out and his budget significantly reduced; whereas the defendant’s budget was approved save for a reduction in the contingencies. With regard to the plea of malice, the Court noted that the claimant’s plea was too vague. The Court stressed that “clarity and precision” are particularly important when an allegation of dishonesty is made, Three Rivers District Council v Bank of England [2004] UKHL 48 applied.

Gavin Millar QC was involved in this case.
