Court considered the meaning of statements in a speech regarding child sex abuse in Rotherham

Re: Barron & Ors v Collins [2015] EWHC 1125 (QB)

Concerned claims for slander and libel arising from a speech given by the defendant at the 2014 UKIP Conference. The Court ruled that the clear impression taken from the speech was that the defendant was deliberately making direct allegations against the claimants when accusing them of knowing about the sexual abuse in Rotherham. This was an allegation of fact. It also stated that the suggestions why they allowed the abuse were expressions of opinions.
