Matthew Ryder KC in conversation with Courtenay Griffiths KC
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Matrix Chambers, WC1R 5LN
Born in Jamaica and brought up in Coventry by ‘Windrush Generation’ parents, Courtenay Griffiths KC is a giant of the criminal bar. A graduate of LSE, he was called to the Bar in 1980 and quickly ascended to the highest levels of the profession at a time when Black barristers were a rarity in England’s courts. He was appointed Silk in 1998.
In addition to becoming known across the country as one of the most compelling advocates of his generation, Courtenay established a formidable reputation as a champion of social justice acting in numerous historic cases, and also remained committed to helping those coming after him. Generations of younger lawyers, including Matthew Ryder, came to know Courtenay as a mentor and role model to whom they attribute much of their own success.
Courtenay will discuss his early years; his experience at the Bar, and his exceptional career and life.
This event is the highlight of Matrix’s Black History Month celebration, and presents a very special opportunity to see and hear from one of the most important and charismatic advocates of modern times.
