Before my experience at Matrix Chambers, I was keen on becoming a solicitor, however after gaining insight into a barrister’s role, I see it as a potential pathway in the future. This has solidified my aspiration to pursue a career in Law and further motivated me to continue developing the skills and knowledge required for the profession.
On Day 1, we were welcomed, given an induction, and were taken for a tour around the buildings. I was intrigued to find out that some listed buildings had strict regulations surrounding their maintenance, repair, and even replacement. This is because the government aims to preserve the historic significance of these buildings by preventing any changes that could detract from their original design and experience. After our tours, we spoke to the assistant fees manager, who explained the crucial role in overseeing the process for chasing routine case-related payments. His responsibilities included dealing with the submission of claims on the Legal Aid Agency’s Client and Costs Management System and any associated assessments/appeals. To end the day, we read through the appellants and respondents skeleton arguments of a case we would watch the following day.
On the second day, I had the opportunity to attend court with one of the barristers. Watching legal arguments unfold in real time was fascinating, especially seeing how barristers present complex legal points clearly and persuasively. It was a great experience to observe not only the advocacy but also the preparation that goes into each case — from analysing evidence to responding to questions from the judge. It really brought the theory of law to life.
The third day was quite varied. I sat in on interviews for the Future Lawyers scheme and had discussions with members of chambers, which helped me understand the career paths that lead to the Bar and the variety of practice areas at Matrix. I was interviewed by 2 members of the fees department; Elaine and Lauren. Initially, I was a little scared as I didn’t know the 5 questions we were going to be asked, however they were both extremely helpful and instantly calmed my nerves due to their welcoming nature. After the interview, I was proud of myself as I managed to concisely answer the questions and engage in an insightful conversation on if University should be free or not. Later, I was given a case to read which challenged me to think critically about legal arguments and case strategy. It was rewarding to apply what I’ve learned in my studies to real-world materials.
On the last day, I had another opportunity to visit court and observe legal proceedings firsthand. The experience provided a valuable insight into how the justice system operates and allowed me to see the roles and responsibilities of different professionals within the courtroom environment. After returning from court, I had the pleasure of speaking with the Fees Team, Elaine and Christine. They were both extremely welcoming and took the time to explain their roles within the firm. Their professionalism and attention to detail highlighted the importance of effective financial management within a legal setting. Overall, the day was both educational and inspiring. Observing the court in session and learning from the Fees Team gave me a broader understanding of how various departments work together to support the firm’s success. It was a valuable experience that enhanced my appreciation for the teamwork and organisation required within the legal profession.
