How I Got My Foot in the Door
I was fortunate to secure a work experience placement at Matrix after submitting a successful application. Initially, I wasn’t familiar with their work, but during my search for work experience placements, I came across their website. I was immediately impressed by the range of impactful cases they handled, such as XY v The Secretary of State for the Home Department [2024] EWHC 81, wherein the High Court ruled the Home Office had unlawfully denied leave to over 1500 confirmed victims of modern slavery. The nature of their work, particularly in such high-profile legal cases, inspired me to apply and pursue the opportunity to learn from their team.
Day 1: Getting Settled In & Introduction to the Team
Our first day began with a warm welcome from the Front of House team, followed by a thorough induction led by Lindsay Clark, the HR Manager. She walked us through health and safety procedures and gave an insightful introduction to the various departments that support barristers in their work. Next, Lindsay took us upstairs to meet Tom Foy, Assistant Practice Manager at Matrix, who shared more about his role and his involvement in the recent defamation case concerning Prince Harry. Tom then introduced us to some of his colleagues, including Charlotte Binning, a Marketing Administrative Assistant, who gave us a research task. We reviewed the Matrix website, noting what we liked about it and how it compared to other chambers’ websites. Later in the afternoon, at 3 p.m., we had the chance to meet a current pupil, who was in the middle of her training placement (Pupillage) at Matrix. This was an especially enlightening moment, as it allowed us to understand the journey towards becoming a barrister. She shared her experiences of the pupillage process, offering practical advice about legal application and interview stages. It was a invaluable opportunity to hear firsthand the ups and downs of pursuing a career as a barrister. The day then wrapped up with Tom letting us know that tomorrow we’ll be shadowing a barrister and visiting a court—something I had never done before!
Day 2: Shadowing a barrister and court preparation
Day 2 was something I had been eagerly anticipating. The morning began with a bit of preparation before heading to court. At 9:00 AM, I spent some time reviewing news articles related to the case we’d be observing and familiarising myself with the core bundles. This helped me grasp the case’s key issues and background. By 9:30 AM, we met David Wolfe, KC, a prominent barrister at Matrix. He took the time to talk us through his work and what to expect from the day ahead. It was fascinating hearing him discuss his approach to legal cases and the nuances of courtroom etiquette. After our briefing, we made our way to the Royal Courts of Justice. As we walked, Mr. Wolfe answered some of our questions about his practice and the legal profession in general. I was keen to know more about how barristers prepare for such complex cases, so I asked him about his preparation strategies, which gave me a deeper insight into what goes on behind the scenes. By 10:00 AM, we arrived at court, and we quietly settled into our seats. The atmosphere in the courtroom was palpable—there was a certain formality and seriousness to the space that I hadn’t fully appreciated before. We waited in anticipation as the judge’s arrival was signalled by a knock on the door, at which point everyone stood in unison. The case then began, and I found myself captivated by the unfolding legal drama.
Day 3: Court observations
On Day 3, we continued to follow the case of Clear the Air in Havering (by Ms. Ruth Susanna Kettle-Frisby) v The London Borough of Havering. This case, which was pivotal for environmental and public health law, saw the ongoing dispute between a concerned local resident and the local council regarding air pollution levels in the area. I became more engaged with the details of the case, listening closely to the arguments being presented. It was eye-opening to see how both sides built their cases, weaving together data, legal precedents, and real-world implications. I found myself following along, trying to make sense of how each piece of evidence and each question directed the case forward. The way the judge cross-referenced both sides of the argument was impressive. The judge’s questions were sharp and showed a deep understanding of the details, ensuring that both perspectives were given equal attention. After both sides presented their arguments, the judge asked if there was anything else to be said, then adjourned the court, explaining that a decision would be made electronically in three weeks’ time. Overall, the day was incredibly insightful. I walked away with a greater appreciation for the level of detail and thought that goes into each case, and how much is required from everyone involved to make a fair and informed ruling. It was a day that not only deepened my understanding of legal proceedings but also further fuelled my excitement about the possibilities in law.
Day 4: Final Reflections, Learning, and Future Opportunities
Looking back, my week at Matrix Chambers was an unforgettable experience that gave me a deep insight into the legal profession and solidified my desire to pursue a career in law. On my last day, I had the chance to write a blog about my experience, reflecting on everything I had learned. I also interviewed for the Future Lawyer Scheme, which felt like the perfect way to cap off an incredible week. The feedback I received was constructive, and the whole process left me feeling motivated and excited about the next steps in my journey. The people I met, the cases I observed, and the knowledge I gained have all inspired me to keep pushing forward in my legal aspirations.
