Kofo’s week at Matrix

The word I would use to sum up my week at Matrix would be insightful. From discussions with different staff members to court visits and coffee chats with pupil barristers, it has truly been a week of insightful information. The first day immediately created an open and friendly culture as I met various staff members and had a useful induction to start the week. The highlight of my first day was definitely having the opportunity to go through a mock interview. Although I wasn’t expecting it, I enjoyed the challenge of interviewing for a completely different role and completing an unseen task.

The next few days at Matrix involved learning more about the roles of the different teams including practice management, marketing, legal support services and the fees and finance team. We were also lucky to be given an amazing and detailed tour of Gray’s Inn by a member of the staff team. Learning about the history of the Inn as well as how the legal profession has progressed over time was certainly one of the highlights of my week.

After a really nice (and informative) discussion with the CEO on Wednesday morning, we went to the Old Bailey and watched a couple of criminal cases which were on that day. Seeing the law in action and watching an opening statement or cross-examination being conducted is an invaluable experience and one which is thankfully open to the public to experience. We were also able to watch some cases at a magistrate’s court where the type of cases heard and the general pace of the day differed massively from that of the Old Bailey. However, both of these court visits were really useful and helped me gain more perspective on the work of a barrister.

Overall, my week at matrix has been full of opportunities for which I am incredibly grateful to have had. I’ve learnt more about how barristers’ chambers operate and gained invaluable advice by speaking to junior and senior barristers. For anyone considering applying to this work experience, I would definitely recommend you do so and if you’re starting your work experience week soon- make the most of the opportunity and speak to everyone you come across!
