| Kate has an established practice in all aspects of environmental law, including domestic, European Union and international cases. Her recent work includes advising the Government of Argentina on its application to the ICJ in a case concerning the construction of pulp mills on the River Uruguay and acting as the Rapporteur for an International Panel examining the legality of special permit whaling. She also practices more generally in public law, European Union law, education law and human rights. She has appeared in a range of judicial review cases including the EU and human rights challenges to the hunting ban; the Gurkhas’ challenge to discriminatory practices in the British Army and the case concerning the legality of public private partnership arrangements for London Underground.
She regularly advises NGOs and others on European and WTO issues in areas such as animal welfare and environmental protection, most recently on the legality of an EU ban on trade in cat and dog fur and on the possibility of banning the sale of illegally logged timber. Notable public international law cases include: USA v European Union (Genetically Modified Organisms-preparatory work for pending WTO Panel proceedings); and Croatia v Fry (ICJ) (genocide).
Before joining Matrix, Kate worked for six years as a lawyer in the former Department of the Environment (International & EC Division), where she gained extensive experience of European litigation and international negotiations.
She lectures and publishes widely on environmental law, the international law of development and human rights law. She is the sole author of Wildlife Law: Conservation and Biodiversity (Cameron May, 2004). Kate is a contributor to Human Rights Practice, ed. Simor (Sweet & Maxwell).
