Sports law differs as an area of practice with the application of a wide range of disciplines to the unique world of sport. Members of the group of Sports lawyers at Matrix have made important contributions to the developing area of sports law.

In the advisory field, Matrix members have advised:

  • the Premier League and Premier League Clubs, on the implications of the Bosman ruling and Commission Statement of objections to the FIFA transfer rules

  • broadcasters, in relation to the investigation into the collective purchasing of rights

  • individuals during their work permit applications, eg. in the Mike Tyson challenge to entry case, and on the implications of immigration law on football transfers and permit free employment

  • individual clubs and players, on the enforceability of transfer restrictions, both under EU law and as potential restraints of trade, and have represented players during contractual negotiations with their clubs or sponsors

  • Sports regulatory bodies, on the compatibility of drugs testing procedures with human rights law

Notable cases in which members of Matrix have appeared include:

  • Restrictive Practices Court during the investigation into the Premier League broadcasting contract and the Competition Commission report on the Manchester United / BSkyB merger proposal

  • The appeal by Middlesborough Football Club to the Football Association Board of Appeal against the Premier League's decision to deduct points from Middlesborough for failing to fulfil a fixture

  • Leeds Football Club v Yorkshire County Cricket Club (the "Headingly Cricket Ground Case")
