From climate change to ghost ships, from aircraft noise to the transboundary impact of crop spraying, the Environment Group at Matrix combines expertise in international, European and domestic law and our members cover all types and areas of work in this fast changing and challenging area.
In addition to our extensive experience of environmental litigation at the international, European and domestic levels, we undertake a diverse range of advisory and other work for international organisations, states, non-governmental organizations and other bodies. Recently we have participated in a major project to support ongoing international negotiations. We have also run training courses for NGOs including on the intersection between human rights and environmental law.
Our members have been involved in the key cases that are mapping out the future of environmental law at all levels:
Internationally, our members regularly appear before international courts and tribunals including the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) and the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) as well as participating in dispute settlement procedures under environmental conventions.
In Europe, we act as Counsel before the European courts as well as advising on the implications of a wide range of EU regulations and proposals including those relating to illegal logging, water quality, radioactive substances, and waste collection and disposal.
Before the domestic courts, we appear in challenges and administrative appeals to regulatory and planning decisions by the Secretary of State and local authorities on behalf of local residents and others and in challenges to licensing decisions by the Environment Agency. We are also involved in private arbitration and ADR.
