Matrix is well known for its leading practice in international arbitration. We also have an extensive and growing practice in a wide range of civil and commercial arbitration and dispute resolution, and a number of members of Matrix are already trained and accredited as mediators (Cherie Booth QC, Maurice Sheridan, Rhodri Thompson QC, Hugh Tomlinson QC).
Leading Matrix practitioners in this area include Lord Dan Brennan QC, who is a member of the London Court of Arbitration, Professor James Crawford SC who is Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge, and Professor Philippe Sands QC who is Professor of Laws at University College London and Director of its Centre on International Courts and Tribunals. Details of some of the key international arbitrations in which they have appeared or been involved can be accessed through this page.
Other members of Matrix are also involved in some important ongoing arbitrations:
* Lord Dan Brennan QC has been chairing an arbitral panel in a bilateral investment treaty under UNCITRAL rules. Alison Macdonald is acting as Registrar to the arbitration.
* Rhodri Thompson QC has been acting as an expert on EC competition law in an international arbitration in South Africa. The case concerns the enforceability of a joint venture agreement between the subsidiaries of two major energy companies.
The interest in alternative forms of dispute resolution or ADR is stimulated by the growing cost of litigation and a recognition that the interests of various parties to disputes are often best served by mediating issues rather than heading straight to contentious proceedings. Increasingly arbitration and mediation tools are being deployed in areas such as employment and education as well as more the more established commercial field.
